Marketing Localization

Marketing content that works in German, too.

Great localization goes beyond translating words. Tone of voice, cultural references, idioms and the intended impact all need to work for a German-speaking audience.

Here is a selection of projects I have worked on in marketing localization.

Motivational YouTube Scripts

Localization of English YouTube scripts for a German-speaking audience

For this project, I localized English-language scripts for a YouTube channel, adapting them for a German-speaking audience. In addition to creating a natural narrative flow and maintaining the motivational tone, adapting cultural references played an important role.

When a direct translation doesn’t work

One example was a reference to Chuck E. Cheese, a well-known restaurant and entertainment chain in the US.

Original meaning

“You’ll feel like a kid walking into Chuck E. Cheese for the first time, excited by all the possibilities around you.”

Direct translation

“Du wirst dich fühlen wie ein Kind, das zum ersten Mal Chuck E. Cheese betritt und von all den Möglichkeiten um sich herum begeistert ist.”

Linguistically, there is nothing particularly wrong with this translation. But it doesn’t have the same effect on a German audience: Chuck E. Cheese is relatively unknown in Germany and therefore doesn’t automatically evoke the same associations it does for an American audience.

Localized version

“Du wirst dich fühlen wie ein Kind im Süßwarenladen, das vor lauter Möglichkeiten gar nicht weiß, wo es zuerst hinschauen soll.”

The specific cultural reference changes, but the intended effect remains the same. That’s what localization is all about.

E-Commerce & Product Marketing

Localizing product and marketing content for the German market

For international e-commerce projects, I have localized product descriptions, headlines, campaign copy, calls to action and other conversion-focused content.

Sometimes, even small adjustments can make the difference between content that simply sounds translated and content that feels genuinely natural.

The message remains the same, but the localized version better reflects the language German-speaking customers are accustomed to seeing in online shops.

Marketing Materials

Brand communication for German-speaking audiences

From headlines and advertising copy to campaign content, I have localized English-language marketing materials for the German market.

Instead of asking:

“How do I translate this sentence?”

I ask:

“How would a brand actually communicate this message in German?”

This helps preserve the brand voice and message without making the final copy sound like a translation.

Website Localization

English websites adapted for the German market

For website projects, I combine translation and localization with my experience in content, marketing and SEO. Beyond language, I consider tone of voice, audience expectations and, where relevant, German search behavior.

With hands-on experience in WordPress and Shopify, I can also implement and format localized content directly in the CMS.

More Than a Direct Translation

Whether it’s a YouTube script, product page, website or marketing campaign, my goal is for the final German content not to feel like a translation.

Cultural references, idioms, tone of voice and common marketing expressions don’t always need to be translated word for word. Instead, I adapt them to ensure that the message and intended effect are preserved.
